I do play occasionally, not atm as I'm waiting for my PC to arrive and my laptop really isn't up to it.

My clan was going to have a BC2 section (me and my friend were the leaders of it) but the lack of mod tools and any sort of competitive support killed it for clan play and we did play a few scrims but it was never meant to be (not to mention the rules at the time had no limit on medics so the entire scrim was mega medic spam)

Counter Strike: Source Plaguefest zombie server. Holds 62 folks, 24/7 zombies.

I had a co-op zombie mod server for Day of Defeat, but I don't have it in my faves...oh well.

D, I don't understand.. what is BC2 missing that is really really needed?

FRAPS / camera pointed at someones screen can record the game for official records, get 2-3 per side and you should have enough angles covered. Not ideal, but the classic method.

You can turn on and off unlocks on private servers can't you? and if not, you can still agree to rules ahead of time regardless can you not?

I honestly don't see what's really needed beyond the bloody game itself TBH... clans started long before anyone ever dreamed of adding clan support... maybe I'm just old skool

Rant/essay coming up:

Clan support isn't needed in the slightest, so long as they actually release mod tools so the competitive community can make what they need. I have never been one for clan support in game as it isn't needed but it is the next best thing in absence of mod tools.

Lets take CoD2 as an example. The vanilla game comes with all weapons unlocked, no unbalanced weapons or game breaking classes etc. All that was needed to make the competitive mod was a "Ready-up mode" before round start (for those who don't know, all players must be ready to play before the match actually starts) and a win counter that did 12 rounds per side (S&D)
When CoD4 was released there were so many weapons that some of the weapons were not so balanced for competitive play so they had to be removed by the mod (P90, skorpion, semi-auto snipers and LMGs. The perks also had to be removed and some of the attachments (RDS + ACOG). The S&D mode also had to be modified to run 12 or 10 rounds per side instead of the 3 rounds that were standard.
/record was used to record the entire round in addition to a 3rd party anti-cheat (such as XAC) to combat cheating.

Skip to BC2, no mod tools. No competitive support.
Certain weapons were instantly banned by the ladders (CG, M60 etc) and class limits were made. However they still require people promising not to use things rather then being forced not to do so.
No battle recorder or /record function meant that FRAPS would have to be used, which on a poorly optimised engine for the PC results in catastrophic FPS on slower PCs and was just not feasible.
The rules were constantly in flux due to the constant re-balancing of weapons etc.
Certain server options are just not there, weapons cannot (or could not last time I really checked) be deactivated, ticket counts could not be altered (they can now) and class limits could not be imposed (lol medic spam)
There is no ready up mode to allow both sides to be ready and connected, only the ability to increase the start timer.
There is no possible way of fast restarting the server (restarts the map without an entire new map load)

To make BC2 competitive would not be hard but they refuse to do it.
All it needs is:
Ready up
Class limits
Weapon deactivation
Battle recorder or client side recording
Fast restart would be helpful but not necessary.

All these problems mean that BC2 has been shunned by the majority of the popular ladders, they exist but they are just nowhere near as popular as they should be. People were ready for BC2 to take over CoD4 as the big competitive but it just didn't. Now its up to Blops to fill that role if they release mod tools.

Basically the more complex games get, the more mod tools are needed to make a competitive environment, unlocks, retard facilitating weapons (CG, GL etc.) and the bane of my gaming life, perks, all throw the balance of games right off and its up to the community to fix it. Fixing stuff like that cannot be done by the devs as they don not wish to exclude massive sections of the player base, which is fair enough, but it needs to be done.

So yes, in the past all this stuff wasn't really needed as the games were so much less complex and varied that very light modification was needed, if any.
CoD2 used the PAM mod in its final iteration for ages.
In CoD4 they are STILL making changes to Promod over three years past release (although I don't agree with most of the changes promod made (removed sniper sway for example).

BF3 needs mod tools or it too will not take off competitively.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I swear "mod tools" provided by the developer is a relatively new thing.....

granted, games were easier to hack back in the day for hackers to make their own mod tools, but my point is I don't remember editing tools being provided back then.

The community did what they had to do.

You don't need 24-32 recorded coppies of the match, 2-3 per side should cover it and I'm sure each team can work that out.. if not? well, then you're not eligible.

As for "needing" to lock out equipment etc.... I still don't see why you can't use an honor system. It's not like this is a random pub match where people will of course use whatever is available... it's a SCHEDULED, ORGANIZED match with SPECIFIC rules to win.

I mean, has the gaming community intelligence level degraded to the point where the clanners can no longer remember which weapons are allowed?

IMO it just looks like a bunch of crybabies who ALWAYS have to complain about something quite frankly.

None of those things are required if you just have people capable of following BASIC instructions

That is the problem. Don't get me wrong here, remember I said above that I attempted to run a BC2 section as it was back at the R6 patch.
It was all the leagues and clans that dropped it like a stone.
Also you have to remember that competitive play isn't always about officials, around 90% of the matches played are friendly or practice scrims.
Now imagine you are playing a friendly then suddenly they decide that you are too good or you are cheating, the entire team then switches to engineer and grabs the CG to ruin the entire game. The only option then is to kick/ban the lot of them from the server or leave yourself.
You then have to jump back on IRC to find another game (not easy when not that many are playing it) and spend ages waiting for people to be ready again.

Also 2-3 from each side recodring is not enough. You either need a battlerecorder (like BF2s that recorded the entire match and you could then play through it using a flying camera etc) or you need individual client side recording that EVERY person MUST record.
Say one team had a single sniper at the back with a wallhack that is not recording. Nobody is there to observe him and it would be nearly impossible to prove that they are cheating unless they were recording or being directly observed.
In the CoD4 ladders I used to play in, not recording was a serious offence. The other team has the right to request demos from each player and if one player does not record then the team forfeits their win and receives a warning.

Also mod tools isn't really that new a concept.
Older competitive games such as CS, CoD, Quake, UT all used the two main engines (or small derivatives of), UE and Quake/ID tech.
This means that you could easily make mods and compile them using the multiple editors that already existed for the game (UnrealED was installed alongside UT2k4 for example), not to mention the games and devs openly welcomed new content and ideas for their fames.
Take the Quake engine, similar compilers could be used to make mods for everything from CS to CoD.

As we go further on the engines get more and more heavily modified (Blops) which the old compilers can't deal with any more or devs make their own proprietary game engines (Frostbite) which are nearly impossible to modify without tools distributed from the devs.

While it wasnt mod tools, the more simplified nature of BC2 Vietnam seems like it would be decent for clan matches.

The overall game is more balanced so you do not need to take away weapons.

But yes, the lack of mod tools, even for simple things like this is frustrating.

Hastings/Phu Bai Conquest is all you need.

Prolly Hastings would be the de-facto clan match for conquest.

Rush.... well, any of them really.

D, as for scrims.... well, it happens... BFD, if its not a ranked league game and they go all n00b on you, well, take that as your victory (they forfeit by breaking the rules) and then beat fire with fire.

You nailed it on the head when you said "It was all the leagues and clans that dropped it like a stone."

That's pretty much IT.

You can blame mod tools, lack of play recorder, or w/e you want... the bottom line is... everyone pussied out. Ergo, whoever remains is the champion by default Razz

Actually, Hastings CQ is probably the single best clan match map/game/mode i've ever seen. It's incredibly well put together and balanced. You don't need to modify a damn thing.

Hastings actually feels like I am playing BF2 sometimes...which is nice!
