Supposedly not because he's unhealthy, just because he's getting old and can no longer do the job fine. First pope in 600 years to give up the position voluntarily.
He was a product of another time and I'm guessing the Church is in for major modernization reforms now. What we are seeing is the re-branding of the Church, like Blackwater and Xe and Academi.

Ironic part is that the Catholic Church was always in a progressive state of mind. Things like the holy sacraments, purgatory, and salvation through works was seen as radical, and in my knowledge, heretical.

But it evolved in jolts of acceptance of previously heretic ideas, such as the things you mentioned. Sometimes old and archaic practices that have served their purpose are abolished and that's one of those jolts "forward" where forward is only seen as the betterment of those in the group and their environment. It's a step in the right direction, if it does indeed bring in reform and isn't legitimately just him being too senile.

I just find it funny that the fact after Revelations, the Bible was finished. Yet for a group of people who believe in an afterlife continue to fuck around with things they know is wrong.

They might accept the truth in it formally rather than just observing it and trying to explain the cause when that cause could contain its entire religion, and does.
