The mother of all builds guys... Selling my old rig, and I just ordered my new parts (kind of jumped the gun, but I have it on a no interest financing card, sooo... even if I don't sell my current rig within the month I am ok. It will sell eventually...)

Case - Corsair Graphite Series 600T http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139007
CPU - Intel Core I5 - 3570K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
CPU Cooler - Corsair H60 Liquid Cooling http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015&Tpk=H60%20corsair
Mobo - Asus Sabertooth Z77 LGA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131821
GPU - Nvidia GTX 670 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133452
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345
PSU - Corsair 750 Watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010

I kinda went all out... I am excited. The thing I am most excited for is the new case with steallar cable management, as well as the modular power supply. My current build with my Antec 600 has NO cable management... while the airflow is nice it just looks shitty. This will be clean, and sleek!

The total build cost will be about $1300 I think

Few things I got with an employee discount at best buy, and on my 18 month no interest card! woohoo!

I will sell my current build for hopefully $800, $700 at the least. once that sells, means I just have $500 to pay off!

Haha, but seriously, that's pretty sweet. I'm sure in the next couple of years I'm gonna bug you on how to build a custom rig.

I don't understand certain compatibilities, or why I should buy a GTX over a Radeon or all of that.

Radeon is fine. The important thing is to match the right GFX chipset with the right CPU

GTX for Intel
Radeon for AMD

If you go Radeon, just make sure you get a GOOD manufacturer cause there IS a lot of garbage... Saphire's are solid though.

Intel is probably easier/safer bet for new builders though since to get the same power out of the AMD rig you'll need to overclock. But you can get more power for less out of AMD doing that.

Oh, and you'll def need cooling for an AMD system (if you're gonna overclock)

I've confirmed my $750 build (with gaming peripherals) will run all existing games on max.

Gnarly is kinda going overboard here. There's a price point and also a capability point. Price Point is where the price starts going up more for each point of a GHz in processing. Capability point is where you can play everything out and projected within the next 12 months at max.

Gnarly is well past both lines (capability max is actually within price point now. I guess we can thank consoles for that) BUT he'll be set for prolly 4 years before he would even need to think about upgrades.

Haha, yes I'm well aware of this. I just kind of want the "best" of what is out there... I'm an addict!

Being my second build I wanted to go a little crazy, but also invest in a few things that I know will last. I learned from my last build...

2 main things for me

Better cable management for my case
modular power supply

These are two things I am focusing on for this new build. The new case and power supply will be something I can use for hopefully well past even my 4+ year lifespan of my CPU and Mobo. I also wanted to switch to an Intel chipset due to some new technology on the market with Ivy Bridge and PCIE 3.0.

My new build will be able to easy upgrade to 16gb ram, and 2+ years from now I just slap in another GTX 670 at a discounted price at the end of its sales lifecycle.

Between Radeon and Nvidia. The latest generation cards on the market (HD7000 and GTX 600s) at least in the high end, Nvidia is out performing AMD in both power and price. The GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7970 are the two flagship cards, that should be even in both power and price. In reality, in the benchmarks that have been release, the GTX 670 (step down from the 680 and $100 less) actually out performs Radeon's flagship 7970!!

7970=680 in Price
7970=/= 680 in Power

So really, if I want the top end, for $100 less than the 7970 I get the 670 that is only 10-8% less than the 680 in gaming benchmarks and STILL outperforms the 7970...

Current gen, on high end... Nvidia all the way, as for mid range, we will see once Nvidia launches their 650 and 660 cards...

eh, At lower price points AMD performs better than Intel though in my experience.

So I'm talking 6850 and quad core AMD.

Currently that is True, the HD 6850 is great.

$190 on up id go Nvidia though, GTX 560, or 560ti

As for processors, according to Toms Hardware reviews, the i3 sandy bridge around $120 out performs AMD, only when overclocked will they perform similarly. In the case of the i3 it is only $10 more!

Yah, my GFX is $150... amazing performance for the cost.

Which is kinda why I went AMD.

And I did mention the need to overclock AMD didn't I? lol Razz

Maybe you can help me with this though...

I've been getting a lot of "dude, get the Phenom"

Comparing:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103996
&
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

It's got a hair less GHz, runs at more watts (which makes me think it's hotter too)

I dun get it.... you know anything about this?

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/328766-31-4100-phenom

seems to be split in the thread, probably very similar between FX-4100 and Phenom ii 965.

However, that 980... http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,review-32368-3.html

Skyrim is the real test of a processor for gaming since Bethesda has the shadows rendered on the CPU not the GPU. That game can cause a HUGE bottleneck on the processors...

Most games that are coded correctly for PC, you will see minimal difference, (or maybe a jump between AMD to Intel depending on architecture)

AKA get the 980 if you're getting an after market cooler anyways

Yeah, it is your best bet, the difference between the chips won't be noticeable compared to the difference in $$$

They might, but for gaming it comes down to them being coded for more than 4 cores.... That is why Bulldozer fails (also that it isn't a true 8 core)

The 955 seems to out perform even when overclocked though... look at the over clocking charts.

IMO Phenom II is a better chip architecture overall, but again, minimal overall difference!

The majority of my parts come today!!!!

I won't have my 670 till monday though! boo...

Sunday is the day I'm actually building the beast, since I won't have any real time till then. Assemble everything and get it all ready, boot up on intel HD4000 graphics, untill I get my 670 on monday!

I am so excited! This build is going to look fucking awesome, pictures will follow in a few days.

Building computers seems to be to me, as tweaking/building cars was to my dad. I just think it is funny, maybe if I explain it to him that way he will see why I do it.

I hate how they announced the express 3 cards a week after I build my computer, I would have kept the same parts but I would have bought a compatible motherboard for the inevitable update.
